Autumn Newsletter 2024

We have so much to tell you about what we've been up to since our last newsletter in the Summer, as well as some interesting projects and events happening this Autumn!

What's the difference between a Blog and a Newsletter?

Newsletters are our quarterly updates on projects & services, which reflect on the previous months, following on from the contents of the last newsletter.

We also add our upcoming events/projects/services and any additional notices for the upcoming few months.

We appreciate a large newsletter can be a lot to read, and in fact some short projects come & go between newsletters, so to be sure we don't miss anything and avoid long waiting times - we post blogs more regularly.

Blogs relate to current activities which will be happening or have recently taken place, within a few months, and gives us an opportunity to introduce services for first time readers and update time tables.

Blogs fill the gaps between each newsletter and make sure we keep you up to date with our latest information. We run a lot of things at once and it is important to keep information updated and on more than one platform.

July Carboot Sale

It seems like we say this every time, but it's absolutely true! It's been our BEST sale YET! The community supported us in raising over £300 on 6th July 2024 at our Carboot Sale, through teas & coffees, £1 entry fee, raffles & our stall that was held in The Social Supermarket. What an amazing amount we raised! Thank you to everyone who came and supported us, as well as the small businesses/individuals that held stalls at our event.

Congratulations to the raffle winners! We hope you enjoyed all of your goodies!

Work Experience Week & Young Volunteers

You might have seen some work experience students in our centre last week from The Joseph Whitaker School (Official Site),they’ve all done a fantastic job!! We’d like to say a huge "thank you" to all 9 of these students for choosing us as their placement and fitting in really well with our team, helping out with:

The Social Supermarket, Donations & Deliveries, Youth Club Sessions, The Chatty Café, Maintenance & Cleaning, Leafleting & much more! All of them have been brilliant, we’ve loved having them - so much that we have enrolled 60% as volunteers and offered all of them projects to come back and get involved in soon.

You’re probably wondering who those lovely students are in the picture! This is Charlie & Harrison, they have loved work experience so much that they’d like to be enrolled onto an apprenticeship with us and are looking at having a job with us in the future  These pair haven’t had the best relationship with formal education (I’m sure many of us can relate) but nevertheless have proven themselves to be hard working individuals with a great attitude and mindset to work, especially the type of work we do here at The Social Action Hub. You might have seen them at our Carboot Sale on Saturday, which they volunteered to do even though work experience had finished!

Thanks to everyone on work experience for being amazing and trying something new, and thanks to Charlie, Harrison & Jack for wanting to stay as a part of our team and to the young volunteers doing DofE or our volunteering programme

We are so lucky to have such brilliant young people in our community!

July Youth Club Sessions

Under 12's Youth Club

We've had a great month at under 12's youth club! Lots of fantastic activities have been taking place, covering the themes: Escape room challenges and puzzles night, Euros, Spread the smile, Nelson Mandela Day & Party Day!

For a more in-depth session-by-session breakdown, please click here

Does this look like something you child would love? If so feel free to use the link below to book. We would love to welcome you.

Over 12's Youth Club

As many of you know, our over 12's youth club sessions are more laid back and youth-led. We encourage the young people of our community to let us know what they would like our BYO (Build Your Own) Youth Club to run like, as well as being a safe, entertaining, relaxed environment where they can thrive. We have conversations and informative discussions about drugs & alcohol, sexual health, the environment, healthy eating, mental health & wellbeing and careers/further education. Here's some pictures from sessions this month:

Forest School Opening Ceremony

We had such a great opening ceremony for our new Forest School Hub! The announcement on the day was lovely to hear:

"I'm thrilled to welcome you all to the grand opening of our Forest School Hub! This magical space, brought to life by The Social Action Hub with the generous support of grants from Newark and Sherwood District Council, Hububs, and the Morrisons Foundations, is a beacon of discovery and learning for conservation and natural habitat in the heart of our community. Thanks to the Nottinghamshire Community Foundations, Notts County Council HAF, Paul Craddock, and the incredible generosity of our local supporters, we have created a place where children and members of the local community, can explore nature, conservation, and forest skills.

Our treehouse will be a sanctuary for outdoor learning and well-being sessions, nurturing minds and bodies in harmony with the natural world.

A heartfelt thank you to VIY and Paul’s Gardens for shaping our vision into reality. Their dedication and expertise have transformed this space into a vibrant hub of creativity and learning. Our staff and volunteers have poured their hearts into decorating and making this hub engaging and fun for all.

Together, we have created a space that will touch lives and make a meaningful difference to our community. As we open our doors to new adventures and experiences, let us embrace the spirit of togetherness and exploration.

Thank you to all who have made this dream a reality. Let's embark on this journey of growth and discovery together. Welcome to our Forest School Hub!"

We all enjoyed a lovely BBQ with Jerk Chicken, Rice, Corn on the Cob & Banana and Ice cream pudding. Thanks to Graham and Sam for being brilliant cooks!

The Forest School Hub will now be available to hire - £10 per hour for charities and good causes or £15 per hour for standard rates.

Please email us at info@thesocialactionhub.com to enquire.

Pop-Up Shop

The pop-up shop has taken place frequently in the past month, so we thought we'd show the amazing offers for just £1 or £2 for as much as you like (all food based pop-up shops are £1 and cleaning product pop-up shops are £2). All of the items are surplus donations we have saved from going to landfill.

Summer Litter Pick

Thank you to everyone who attended our Summer Litter pick this year!

We collected around 20 bags of rubbish between 15-20 volunteers from the streets including & surrounding Kirklington Road after the amazing village event Renfest.

Renfest was a brilliant event this year, many local businesses took part in the festival celebration and provided our community with all sorts of stalls, including food, games, toys, gifts & raffles, as well as live music and entertainment.

Thank you to Team Vinyl who took part in our litter pick after the event!

Summer Playscheme & Forest School

Playscheme Sessions

Throughout the school holidays, we've enjoyed four weeks of Playscheme Sessions! The themes we have covered this summer are: Sports Day, Bake off & Nature Day, Inventors Day, Teddy Bears Picnic, Romans, Tudors, Medieval, 21st Century, International Youth Day, Vet Day, 7 Wonders of the world, Youth Fest & Water Fun, Brazil, France, Germany, Ukraine (around the world week). We had such a fantastic time, and even better weather! Thanks to everyone who came and had fun this summer.

Trips

This Playscheme, we went on 4 trips to local parks in the district: Newstead Abbey Park, Clumber Park, Mansfield Museum, Carr Bank Park and finally Rufford Abbey Park. We had lots of fun exploring these parks and having a picnic! We played lots of games throughout the day and even had ice cream :D

Forest School Sessions

We have enjoyed 4 wonderful forest school sessions this summer, we used our new Forest School Hub, as well as taking trips out to the local woodland to forage and play games. This summer we made campfire donuts, jacket potatoes, paninis, bug hotels, went bug & leaf identifying, made leaf ID booklets, leaf butterflies, land art mandalas, cloud viewers, leaf suncatchers, a forest school handprint tree, natural eco friendly paints, and took part in some sit-spot meditation as well as lots & lots of games!

Special Visitors

Throughout Playscheme we've had some special visitors! Our first special guest was Jess Clarke ex-lioness, who came and ran some fitness drills & played football, as well as giving the children a PowerPoint presentation on her story and journey as a footballer! We finished off with a Q&A opportunity and some pictures with Jess. What a truly inspirational woman!

We had some 4-legged friends visit us for Vet Day, including Raphael the Horsefield Tortoise, Sheila the Bearded Dragon, Little Prince the Leopard Gecko & Betsy the Frenchi-pei. All children who wanted to hold, feed or stroke of the animals, did so and thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Look at these lovely pictures capturing amazing & intrigued faces.

ImageSkool were our final visitors throughout Playscheme, who came to do our spray paint project to transform the front of our building into beautiful wildlife imagery. Lots of us took part in spray painting for the very first time, and created some amazing artwork!

Over 12's Youth Club

This summer at Over 12's Youth Club, we've enjoyed sessions in the sunshine and put together some great activities, such as: Protect the egg challenge, Q&A with staff, Tug of War, Rainworth Scavenger Hunt, Designing for the outside paint project & spray painting, BBQ and more! Throughout the sessions we held discussions with the young people about: general advice & support, relationship & sexual advice (C-CARD), drug & alcohol use, environmental & social issues in the community, mental & physical health & well-being, bullying and staying safe.

Walk, Talk & Listen - Sherwood Voices Special

We had such a blast from the past listening to all of Rainworth's history and special stories! A local walk & talk group came to join us on this walk, and made the following post:

"Walking the route of "Jenny's Story," we listened to her account of the area through our headsets. Although we covered just over a couple of miles, it felt like we were transported back in time. Unlike our usual walks, we were encouraged not just to talk but to actively listen to Jenny's story, along with others like John Durkin. The history lesson was both fun and entertaining, helping me to put things in perspective. Even though I've ventured along these paths and tracks over the past seven years, I have learnt quite a lot.

If you hear about these "Walk, Talk & Listen" events, I highly recommend joining in—I'll definitely be there!

Thanks, everyone  𝓚𝓮𝓷"

Spray Paint Project with ImageSkool

As much as we loved our frog  we decided to part ways… and revamp the front of our building to become this beautiful British wildlife scene

Thanks to ImageSkool and young people from Rainworth & surrounding areas, this beautiful artwork was brainstormed and created together in some designing sessions which then turned into this amazing, collaborative spray paint piece! The young people (some as young as 6 years old!) thoroughly enjoyed spray painting with the experts

Thank you again ImageSkool for coming back to The Social Action Hub and doing another brilliant project with the young people from our community. The first two pictures are how it looked before - we hope you agree it's a worthy freshen up and transformation.

August Carboot Sale & Fundraising Family Fair

We had our very first Carboot Sale on tour in August at The Sherwood Pub! It was a fantastic day to bring together the community, enjoying a BBQ, Bouncy Castle, (perhaps a beer!), Carboot stalls, Tombola & Raffles and more. Thank you Laura at the Sherwood for making this possible, and helping us raise an outstanding £1000 from the event! Here are a few images of The Social Action Hub's stalls:

On the same day, we were at St Simon and St Jude church in Rainworth at a Family Fun Morning including: Children's games, crafts, story time with Revd Zoe at a teddy bears picnic, teddy tombola, Hairy Toms forest school, Drumming, BJ Bakery provided hot food, Coffee Shop served cream teas, and Perfectly Baked with Amy had fabulous cakes.

We were at the Church until 12pm doing face painting, glitter tattoos & an information stand - where you could find out more about and even sign up to any of our services.

Thank you to everyone who supports our fundraising events & The Social Action Hub charity mission to support our local community!

Blidworth Walk & Talk

Thank you to those who came to our last walk & talk of the year!! We enjoyed a lovely walk from The Bird in Hand Pub, down & around the Meadows, walking past lots of farm animals surrounded by beautiful scenery. The walk lasted around 1.5/2 hrs, however it felt like it flew by! The weather behaved for us thankfully!! We had some lovely conversations, meeting new people & making new connections in our community.

We returned to The Bird to enjoy some Greggs pastries & a drink

Thank you to The Bird In Hand At Blidworth for being our meeting point & hosting for us, and thank you to EVERYONE who came!

The following words have been shared from Ken from a local Walk & Talk group who joined us on this lovely day:

"Sashaying on a Saturday with Daisy and The Social Action Hub, beginning at the charming The Bird In Hand At Blidworth.

As we strolled, with a mix of leisurely conversation and effortless movement, our hips and shoulders swayed in a rhythmic dance (though I barely noticed!). What began as a planned 1½-mile route pleasantly stretched to nearly three—time just flew by.

A heartfelt thanks to Daisy for leading the way, and to everyone who joined the adventure. The walk was over all too soon, but I’m especially grateful to both Daisy and John for sharing their wealth of knowledge and also childhood secrets. I hope that over time, I'll be able to pass on some of this knowledge and enthusiasm.

Don’t miss the photos! If you glance toward the southeast, you’ll spot a castle perched on the hills. My camera may not be as sharp as John’s binoculars, but it’s well worth the view especially of a castle some twenty to thirty miles away, that's if you get the chance. From New Lane, not only can you see the power stations, but if you look up, you’ll spot planes heading to and from East Midlands Airport and even circling in their holding patterns.

A lovely detail: the stonework outside St. Mary’s Church marks our elevation at 500 feet (150 meters) above sea level, and the nearby building—dated 1909—features a decorative hopper on its downpipe, a testament to the craftsmanship of the time.

I hope that one day, John will guide us around this area again, sharing more of his insights.

After the walk, we enjoyed refreshments at The Bird, and it was exciting to hear the discussions about next year's potential walking routes—they sound fantastic! A big thank you to those who brought pasties and cookies. I hope you all have a great time at tonight’s fundraiser, and meeting the incredible Rebecca Adlington."

September Carboot Sale

This September's Carboot sale was our last of the year!

We had a brilliant time in the sunshine and had a few stalls come and join us

You all helped us raise an amazing £320 at our September Carboot Sale (we announced £270, but in addition to card payments it makes a total of £320) well done everyone!!

Everyone’s contributions are greatly appreciated. Please stay tuned for a poll being put out about holding a Christmas Market!

Congratulations to our Hamper Winners! We will be announcing the upcoming Autumn Raffle winners on Halloween (31st October)!

Here's what our visitors & stall holders thought about this event:

Newark & Sherwood Community Awards

You’re looking at the PROUD WINNERS of the 'Business Commitment to the Community Award 2024' - Wooooowwwww!! We are so proud of our team for being amazing as always. A few of us were lucky enough to receive this award on stage after a delicious dinner at Kelham Hall.

We truly do enjoy going above and beyond to provide support to our local community. This award is a great opportunity to say "Thank You" to our team for constantly striving every day to uplift those around us from all walks of life.

Thank you to ALL of our team - Including volunteers!!

Thank you to Newark & Sherwood Community & Sports Awards for hosting at this lovely event, and especially for presenting us with this amazing award! We feel so proud.

One last thank you for our family & friends, supporters, neighbours, beneficiaries; ALL of you deserve recognition for supporting our cause and making the cogs turn continuously in the running of The Social Action Hub. #Prouuuuuuddddddd

News Journal published the following article:

"A Rainworth charity which has been making a difference to people’s lives for more than 30 years is celebrating winning a regional award.

The Social Action Hub works to improve residents’ life chances and increase sustainable opportunities for those who are deprived, isolated, and marginalised in the community.

It won the Business Commitment to the Community Award, sponsored by Newark College, at the Newark and Sherwood Community and Sports Awards 2024.

Organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council, in partnership with Radio Newark, the event honoured people who have gone above and beyond to support the community and champion the growth of sports.

Representatives from the charity are pictured after receiving their award at The Renaissance at Kelham Hall, near Newark.

Daisy Dady, Centre Co-ordinator, said they were proud to win the award.

“We are so proud of our team for being amazing, always. We truly do go above and beyond to provide support to our local community and this award is a great opportunity to say thank you to our team for constantly striving every day to uplift those around us from all walks of life"

“Thank you to all of our team, including our volunteers"

“Thank you to Newark and Sherwood Community and Sports Awards for hosting us at this lovely event, and especially for presenting us with this amazing award!"

“And thank you to our family and friends, supporters, neighbours, and beneficiaries. All of you deserve a thank you for supporting our cause and making the cogs turn at The Social Action Hub.”

The Social Action Hub, based on Kirklington Road, was formed in 1993 after pit closures led to high levels of deprivation in the village.

Initially called the Detached Youth Project when it focused on street-based outreach work with young people, the charity was renamed The Social Action Hub in 2019.

One of its biggest success stories in recent years has been the growth in services for food sharing to help food poverty, but it is ready to tackle any issue with support — including isolation and loneliness, mental health & wellbeing, and education including life skills.

District council leader Councillor Paul Peacock, of Edwinstowe, said: “Our district is full of amazing individuals who do great things in our communities. Whether it be helping neighbours in an emergency, working as backroom staff for a sports club, or inspiring others to contribute to the area, there’s so much to celebrate"

“Often these individuals do not get the recognition they deserve, so this award ceremony was the perfect opportunity to say thank you to those that deserve it the most. I’m thrilled to have celebrated the amazing accomplishments of our residents across the district.”

A total of 14 categories received awards in front of around 300 guests."

Our Over 12's Youth Club members have done a beautiful job at designing & painting these old shirts, giving them a new purpose & whole new look. Well done to everyone who took part!

Charity Swimathon

The overlook/results compiling all team's and organisation's contributions haven't been published yet on the Armchair website (please do check out their website!), however we will share our Team Photo and a description of what the Swimathon was all about, as well as a Congratulations to our team for partaking in this event and raising sponsor money for our charity & Armchair.

What is a Swimathon?

This event was a great opportunity for schools, clubs, charities, local volunteering groups, and individuals to enjoy a short 15-minute swim at the Water Meadows Swimming Complex in Mansfield, whilst at the same time raising money for both their personal charity and the important fund raising which Mansfield Rotary and the Armchair Club carry out in supporting local good causes across Mansfield & Ashfield.

All participants received a medal presented by the President of Mansfield Rotary as they left the pool. A new initiative this year will be the entry of the lengths that each swimmer has completed as they leave the pool, which will mean the results will be known immediately.

Congratulations to all teams who came to the event and completed a 15-minute swim!

Revive - Update & New Products!

We apologise for any complications with 'Revive', our online charity shop during our maintenance week - we had a whole restructure of our internal system and a clear out of old products that were repurposed at other organisations who have better use for them, which means....

Including products at 20%-70% off their retail price!

There's something for everyone on there! Please see poster for guidance on how to access our online shop.

Every time you purchase, you are contributing to our NO WASTE mission and stopping items from going to landfill!

It provides young people the opportunity to work together as a team, using their collective skills and initiative to complete a series of tasks and challenges, through a route within the boundaries of Sherwood Forest, in the dark.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the event and we promise it will be the best one yet!

Our team will be running a challenge for the rest of the attendees to complete, which we have chosen to be a Murder Mystery type theme! This will be a true challenge for those playing and so much fun for our team to stay up late and spook people haha!

Hires can be throughout the week or at the weekend - if the hire falls on a week day, then this would have to work around our current projects & services and would have staff present in the building during these times (however would not interfere with the hire)

Room Hire Rates:  £15 per hour / £10 per hour for charity & good causes

£5 extra for kitchen use

If you are looking to hire, please email info@socialactionhub.com or call 01623 490498 to see availability.

Animal Food Bin

To make our food go even further, we put all of the food no longer fit for human consumption in our 'animal food bins'.

The bins are clearly labelled with their contents 'Bread & Pastries' and 'Fruit & Vegetables'.

Anyone is free to collect food from the animal food bins at the collection times:

Monday - Friday 9am-4pm

The bins are located outside of The Social Supermarket in front of the grey gates.

Volunteering

We have a range of volunteering opportunities available to suit everyone's needs and availability. Roles can be in support of D of E, Work experience, or general volunteering. You could volunteer in areas such as:

  • The Chatty Cafe

  • The Social Supermarket - store assistant

  • The Social Supermarket - food collector

  • Youth Club & Playscheme

  •  Community Events (litter picks, carboot sales, fundraising events)

  • Admin Support

To find out more about the requirements and responsibilities for each role, please contact info@socialactionhub.com or call 01623 490498 to have a discussion.

We are flexible, and will be able to find something that suits you!

Too Good To Waste - Pop Up Shop

On selected Fridays when we have excess food from The Social Supermarket (usually fruit & veg and bread & pastries), we hold a pop up shop.

It is £1 for as much as you like

Available from 9am - 11am

This service is a part of our FoodShare scheme, tackling food poverty and preventing food waste. We try to make all of our food go further, as it is 'too good to waste'!

As the pop up shop is only available on selected days, please join our Facebook Group for updates.
